Google is rolling out an algorithm update, starting in May, that will increase the effect of it’s mobile-friendly ranking signal.

Sites that are mobile-friendly will have the chance to rank higher than their competitors who have yet to make their websites friendly for mobile devices

“Beginning in May, we’ll start rolling out an update to mobile search results that increases the effect of the ranking signal to help our users find even more pages that are relevant and mobile-friendly.”

Klemen Kloboves, a Google Software Engineer

If your website isn’t mobile-friendly at present this would be a good time to think about that change, below is the criteria that Google looks at to see if your site should be labeled mobile-friendly

  • Make sure the site does not use software that is not common on mobile devices, eg Flash
  • Make the text readable without the need for zooming
  • Sizes content to the screen so users don’t have to scroll horizontally or zoom
  • Place links at a decent distance apart so they can be easily clicked on with a finger

Google update will rank ‘mobile-friendly’ sites even higher
